Ash Dinner

Ash Dinner: A Simple Meal, A Sacred Beginning

Every year the season of Lent begins not with noise, but with a quiet invitation—to slow down, to remember who we are, and to draw nearer to Jesus. At Calvary Chandler, we begin that journey together through Ash Dinner, an evening that blends a shared meal with worship, reflection, and the marking of ashes.

On this special night, we gather around tables instead of pews. We eat together as family. We listen together to Scripture. And we receive the sign of the cross in ashes on our foreheads—a humble reminder that our lives are fragile, that God’s mercy is real, and that the road to the cross leads to resurrection.

Why Ash Dinner?

In a busy, distracted world, it’s easy to rush straight to Easter without walking through the wilderness that comes first. Ash Dinner helps us pause at the doorway of Lent. The ashes echo the ancient words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” calling us to honest repentance and fresh dependence on Christ.

But this night is not heavy—it’s hopeful. We begin Lent together because faith was never meant to be lived alone. Around the table we remember that Jesus meets us in ordinary places: in bread broken, in prayers whispered, in community that carries one another.

What to Expect
