Our Calvary Staff Pastoral Team

Pastor Martin Spaude

Meet the calvary lutheran church staff Chandler AZ, a dedicated team of pastors, directors, and ministry leaders committed to serving our congregation and community. Pastor Martin Spaude was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota but spent most of his childhood growing up in Watertown, Wisconsin.  After graduating from Northwestern Prep School and Northwestern College in Watertown he attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin, graduating in 1986.  Having married Debbie Sprain that summer he moved to Plymouth, MN where he taught for two years at West Lutheran High School (Religion, German, Latin).  Following those two years he served as pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Appleton, Wisconsin for six years and then took the call to serve as pastor at Calvary Lutheran, a position he is currently serving.  The Lord has blessed Pastor and Debbie with four children: Paul, Nicki, Jenny and Michelle and seven grandchildren.

Pastor Roger Sprain

Pastor Roger Sprain was born, baptized, attended grade school and was confirmed at Friedens Ev. Lutheran Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Graduating from Norwestern Lutheran Preparatory School and Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin, he attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary graduating in 1961. The same year he married Ruth Kuhn. The Lord has blessed them with three now grown children, eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. After beginning his ministry in Douglas, Bisbee, Arizona, Pastor Sprain served much of his ministry using the Spanish Language. Almost 10 years were in Puerto Rico followed by almost seven years in Colombia, South America. Later, in the concluding years of his fulltime ministry, he taught congregational Cuban leaders for almost 5 years. Stateside he served in Denver, Colorado and Madison, Wisconsin. Then, he was a Professor at Northwestern and Martin Luther Colleges for nine years. After retirement from fulltime ministry in 2001 he has been privileged to serve in various capacities in various places in and outside the USA. Presently, he serves part-time here at Calvary as a retired Pastor.

Both of our pastors are graduates of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary and are ordained ministers of the Word within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). This heritage shapes everything we do, from Sunday worship services and Sunday School to our Confirmation Class and community care programs.
