Our Mission and Beliefs at Calvary Lutheran
What do Lutherans believe? That is one of the most important questions anyone can ask about the Christian faith. Our mission and beliefs are firmly rooted in the Holy Scriptures, the inspired, inerrant Word of God, and in the Lutheran Reformation heritage that recovered the Gospel of grace for the whole world.
Understanding our mission and beliefs is central to knowing who we are. Calvary Lutheran is a member congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), one of the most doctrinally faithful Lutheran church bodies in North America.
What We Believe: Mission and Beliefs at Calvary Lutheran
Everything we believe, teach, and confess at Calvary Lutheran Church is grounded in the Bible as the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God. We subscribe to the Lutheran Confessions as a correct and faithful summary of what Scripture teaches, including the three Ecumenical Creeds, the Augsburg Confession, Luther’s Small and Large Catechisms, and the Formula of Concord.
Our Mission
Proclaim the Gospel
Our first and greatest calling is to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ: that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
Teach God’s Word
We are committed to sound, faithful teaching of the Bible from the pulpit, in our classrooms, and in every ministry of the church. We believe God’s Word is the only rule and norm for Christian faith and life.
Serve in Love
Motivated by the love of Christ, we seek to serve one another and our neighbors in Chandler and beyond, meeting both spiritual and practical needs in the name of Jesus.

Law and Gospel: The Heart of Our Message
At the center of Lutheran theology is the distinction between Law and Gospel. The Law reveals our sin and our need for a Savior. The Gospel announces that Jesus Christ has fulfilled the Law perfectly on our behalf, died for our sins, and risen from the dead, giving us forgiveness, life, and salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
The Sacraments
We believe that God works through two sacraments: Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. In Baptism, God creates or strengthens saving faith. In the Lord’s Supper, Jesus gives us His true body and blood with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins.
